Stop, Breathe, Smile

There is much history on display at Langdell.

In the most recent issue of Harvard Magazine, the vita column is about Wendell Phillips (1811-1884), HLS Class of 1834, orator and reformer. You can find his original law office sign in Areeda 524. You may have taken a class in this room. Across the hall next to Areeda 504 is the 34-star American flag of Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. (1841-1935), U.S. Supreme Court Justice, HLS Class of 1866, and the second cousin, once removed of Wendell Phillips. So after the last paper is handed in, the last exam taken and before you jet off to summer associate land, take a moment and soak in the history you speed by everyday. Notice Gov. Deval Patrick’s name on the Ames Winners plaques in the Reading Room; look at the portraits of judges and legal scholars throughout the Library; spend five minutes in the Caspersen room looking at the latest exhibit. Stop, breathe, smile.
