Passport Rules Relaxed for Some Travel in the Western Hemisphere

If you are a U.S. citizen who has applied for a passport but you have not yet received it, you needn’t cancel your plans to travel by air to Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda this summer. Through September 30, 2007, you can meet the passport requirement with a government-issued photo identification and official proof of your passport application from the Department of State. According to the Department’s announcement, the government is making ” this accommodation for air travel due to longer than expected processing times for passport applications in the face of record-breaking demand.”

Travelers may obtain proof of passport application online.
More information is available at the Department of State web site.
