Portraits of Sandra Day O’Connor – an exhibit at the National Portrait Gallery, is a current exhibition in which a group of artists called The Painting Group interprets the same subject at the same time.
The Painting Group is a New York-based group of twenty-five artists and it has been meeting regularly for forty years. In late 2006, Justice Sandra Day O’Connor sat for the Painting Group for one full-day session. Commissioned last year to honor Justice O’Connor’s retirement from the Supreme Court of the United States, the exhibition includes the twenty-five portraits of O’Connor completed by the artists following that sitting.
