Storm Alert: HLS Library Closed January 29, 2022

Anticipating tomorrow’s blizzard, the Harvard Law School Library will be closed on Saturday January 29, and will reopen at noon on Sunday January 30, 2022. 24/7 access to the second floor of the Library is available to HLS students during this time. Stay safe and warm out there!

This scene of a house in winter is from an undated photograph in Historical & Special Collections’ Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. collection. It bears the inscription: “Warm love and Easter greetings for Wendell from Gar. / Our garden in winter quarters”.

  1. This photo, sent to Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., at Easter-time one spring, came from a friend who called him Wendell. The friend’s first name or nickname began “Gar____.” The photo shows Gar’s snow-covered garden. It might have been a place that Holmes knew from visiting. Maybe “Gar.” is short for the nickname “Gardenia”?–did Holmes use that nickname for anyone in his life? Does any “Gar.” jump out of Finding Aids, etc. describing OWH correspondence?
