When a transaction or occurrence has contacts with more than one jurisdiction, and their laws lead to conflicting results, what law applies? Over time, scholars have proposed, and states have adopted, different ways of choosing the governing law. The field of conflict of laws includes rules governing choice of laws among the states and between the laws of a state and those of a foreign nation, personal jurisdiction, recognition of judgments, conflicts between tribal law and state law, and extraterritorial application of federal law.
