Inclusion and Belonging

“The goal is for all of us to feel that we belong at HLS while affording one another grace and an equal opportunity to engage in the full vibrancy of the institution.”

—Monica E. Monroe
Assistant Dean for Community Engagement, Equity, and Belonging, HLS

This is your Harvard Law

An essential humanity nurtures our deeply connected community at Harvard Law School.

  • Listening generously
  • Examining our own preconceptions, and
  • Participating in an exchange of ideas

Those principles are all part of a positive learning process.

Our students, staff, faculty, and researchers come from around the United States and all over the world. They represent nearly every background and lived experience. Each student who attains a place on this campus belongs here.

We may differ from each other in various ways—geographic, ideological, social and economic circumstances, and many others—but, crucially, what everyone at Harvard Law School shares is a dedication to excellence, making a positive impact in the world, and the fundamental pursuit of truth, law, and justice.

“I thought I was going to have to change a lot of things to be successful here, but the fact ended up being that I could authentically bring my whole self and still thrive [at Harvard Law School].”
